Anyone can buy a chainsaw on a Saturday
Here is an uncomfortable truth about tree work. Someone can buy a saw and a pickup on a Saturday and be quoting removals by Monday.
There is no required training and no license specific to the trade, in an industry where mistakes are measured in caved-in roofs and emergency room visits. That should give you pause when you are hiring.
It gave Robert pause too, early in his career. It is why he went after the ISA Certified Arborist credential.
The certification is the industry’s answer to that low bar. Before you can even sit for the exam you have to document years of professional experience.
The exam itself is proctored and covers tree biology, diagnosis, soil science, pruning standards and safe work practice. The credential expires unless you keep up continuing education. It is issued by the International Society of Arboriculture, and every certificate carries a number that anyone can verify.
ISA keeps a public directory of current certificate holders at treesaregood.org, searchable by name. Robert Burgund is listed there with a current credential. Honestly, do this with every company you are considering, not just us. Ask who on the crew actually holds the certification, then look that person up. It takes one minute, and it filters out most of the risk in the decision.
What the certification changes on your property
- Removal stops being the reflex. A buried trunk flare, a girdling root and simple drought stress all look like a dying tree, and all three are frequently fixable. A certified arborist checks for the fixable causes before recommending the saw.
- Cuts land where the biology says they should. Cut into the branch collar and you have removed the tissue the tree seals wounds with. Leave a long stub and it dies back into the trunk. Neither mistake is visible the week the crew leaves, and both are obvious five years on.
- Timing accounts for disease. We do not prune oaks here between mid-April and mid-July, because fresh wounds attract the beetles that spread oak wilt, and an infected red oak can be dead in weeks.
- Risk gets judged on defects, not on looks. Decay at the base, a cracked fork, a root plate starting to lift. Trees that look terrible often stand for decades, and trees that look fine sometimes fail. Knowing the difference is the whole job.
