What to expect in your town
The tree stock, the access and the rules all shift from one town to the next. These pages cover what applies where you live.
- Birmingham: Tight lots and a mature canopy. Most removals here get rigged over the roof.
- Bloomfield Hills: Estate oak and beech, with a Building Department plan review before any removal.
- Troy: Storm-prone silver maple and standing dead ash, governed by Section 13.07.
- West Bloomfield: Lakefront access work, plus a 25-foot environmental features setback along the water.
- Royal Oak: Dense blocks with power lines through the back yards. Rigging country.
- Rochester Hills: Regulated from 6 inches, though occupied single-family lots under an acre are exempt.
- Novi: Trees 36 inches and up are protected everywhere on a parcel. Inside a woodland the line drops to 8.
- Waterford: Thirty-four lakes, which means shoreline root systems and tight access at the water’s edge.
- Farmington Hills: Regulated from 6 inches. Two removals a year without a permit, and landmark trees always need one.
- Clarkston: Oak-hickory woodland at the edge of Independence Oaks.
- Milford: The Huron River corridor, between Kensington and Proud Lake.
- Pontiac: Older housing stock, and a lot of ash lost to the emerald ash borer.
- Commerce Township: Wetland and shoreline setbacks shape what can happen where.
