Oak Wilt in Michigan: Signs, Treatment, and the Pruning Window

Updated September 7, 2026 · Written by Rob Burgund, ISA Certified Arborist MI-4857A

Oak wilt is a fungal disease that can kill a healthy red oak in a single season, sometimes within four weeks of infection. It is well established across Michigan. The single most valuable thing a homeowner can do about it costs nothing: do not prune oaks between April 15 and July 15.

The short version

An infected red oak cannot be saved. A white oak caught early, under roughly 30% of the crown affected, may respond to fungicide injection by a qualified arborist. Prevention is dramatically cheaper than either outcome, and prevention is mostly a matter of timing.

How to recognize it

According to MSU Extension, infected leaves brown or bronze from the tips and margins inward. They characteristically drop with half or more of the leaf gone at once, veins included.

Pair that with wilt marching top-down through the crown, and a tree can defoliate in about three weeks. That is what separates oak wilt from ordinary drought scorch. Browning edges alone do not, because leaf scorch makes the same pattern.

The typical sequence:

  • Leaves take on a wilted, dull light-green cast in summer. Usually the first thing anyone notices.
  • They turn yellow, then brown, and fall while still partly green.
  • The leaf drop starts at the top of the tree and works down and outward.
  • Dark streaking shows in the sapwood just under the bark on cut branches.
Red oaks do not give you time

A red oak can be dead and bare within four weeks of infection. If your red oaks are dropping green leaves in July, that is not a wait-and-see situation. Get it looked at now.

How it spreads, and why the calendar matters so much

There are two routes. Underground, through root grafts, where the roots of neighboring oaks of the same group literally grow together and the fungus walks across the connection, killing a stand one tree at a time.

The other is overland, carried by sap beetles drawn to fresh wounds during the growing season.

That second route is the one you control. A pruning cut in June is an open invitation. The identical cut in January is nothing.

MSU Extension’s guidance is to avoid pruning oaks from April onward, with the highest-risk window running roughly mid-April through mid-July. Some guidance extends the caution all the way to October. Winter is the unambiguously safe season, and it is when we book oak pruning.

If an oak gets wounded in season anyway

A storm break, a mower strike, a snapped limb. Seal the wound immediately. This is the one situation where wound paint is genuinely recommended rather than discouraged, and immediately means minutes to hours, not the weekend.

Where it bites hardest in Oakland County

Oak is the signature tree of the county’s older estates and its northern woodland. The century-old white and red oaks of Bloomfield Hills, the big-tree woodland lots around Clarkston, and the oak-heavy subdivisions of Rochester Hills are exactly where one badly timed pruning job can take out a whole stand through root grafts. In those places the pruning window is not a technicality. It is the whole job.

Getting a real diagnosis

Oak wilt cannot be confirmed by eye. Confirmation takes either a fungal mat found under the bark, the spore-producing pad the fungus grows on a red oak it has killed, or a laboratory test.

If you are sending samples, MSU’s instructions are specific. Three twigs from three different branches with wilting leaves, each at least an inch thick and six inches long, cut from live tissue that is green or white under the bark. Dead-branch samples will not return a result.

What we do about oak wilt

  • Diagnosis and sampling as part of a tree risk assessment.
  • Root graft disruption where an infected tree stands near healthy oaks, severing the underground connection before the fungus crosses it.
  • Removal of confirmed red oaks, timed and disposed of so the infected wood does not become the source of the next outbreak.
  • Scheduling every oak job outside the risk window, as a matter of routine rather than exception.

Oak wilt questions we hear most

When is it safe to prune oaks in Michigan?

Winter, when the tree is dormant and the sap beetles that carry oak wilt are inactive. The window to avoid is April 15 through July 15 at an absolute minimum, because that is when the beetles are flying and a fresh cut is the thing they are looking for. MSU Extension advises against pruning oaks from April onward, and some guidance extends the caution through October, so if the work can wait for leaf drop, let it wait. This applies to every oak, red or white, and to any wound, not just pruning: a mower strike or a snapped limb in June needs sealing the same day. Winter has two other advantages. The structure of the tree is easy to read without leaves, and demand is lower, so it is the cheapest season to book. If a company offers to prune your oak in May, hire someone else.

Is it too late to trim my oak in June?

For anything non-urgent, yes, so hold off until winter. If a limb is a real hazard it still has to come off, but the wound must be sealed on the spot.

Can an infected oak be saved?

A red oak, no. Once the fungus is in a red oak’s water-conducting tissue the tree typically dies within weeks, and the only useful response is prompt removal, timed and disposed of so the wood does not seed the next outbreak, plus cutting the root grafts to any healthy oaks nearby. A white oak is a different case. White oaks wall the fungus off more effectively and decline slowly, sometimes over years, so if less than about 30% of the crown is involved, a fungicide injection by a qualified arborist can halt the spread and keep the tree. Diagnosis has to come first. Oak wilt cannot be confirmed by eye, and treatment on the wrong species or too late is money spent on a lost cause. Confirm the species, confirm the disease with a lab test or a fungal mat, then decide.

Will it spread to my neighbor’s oaks?

It can, and this is the reason to act fast on a confirmed case. Underground, the roots of neighboring oaks of the same group grow together, and the fungus crosses those grafts from a dying tree into a healthy one. A single infected red oak can take out a line of red oaks along a property boundary over a few seasons that way. Overland, sap beetles pick up spores from fungal mats on a dead tree and carry them to fresh wounds on oaks nearby. So a confirmed red oak should come down promptly, the root connections to neighboring oaks should be cut, and the wood should be removed or covered, not stacked as firewood beside the next oak. Tell your neighbor, too. Their oaks are at the same risk as yours, and the fix is cheaper done together.

Is oak wilt the same thing as EAB?

No. Emerald ash borer is an insect that kills ash trees, and oak wilt is a fungus that kills oaks. Both are serious in Michigan, and they call for completely different responses. Our EAB guide covers the ash side.
