Anyone can buy a chainsaw on a Saturday
Someone can buy a saw and a pickup on a Saturday and be quoting removals by Monday.
Michigan has no license specific to the trade and no required training, in an industry where mistakes are measured in caved-in roofs and emergency room visits. That should give you pause when you are hiring. It gave Rob pause too, early on. It is why he went after the ISA Certified Arborist credential.
The certification is the industry’s answer to that low bar. Before you can sit for the exam you have to document years of professional experience. The exam is proctored and covers tree biology, diagnosis, soil science, pruning standards and safe work practice. The credential expires unless you keep up continuing education. It is issued by the International Society of Arboriculture, and every certificate carries a number that anyone can verify.
ISA keeps a public directory of current certificate holders at treesaregood.org/findanarborist, searchable by name and by certification number. Robert Burgund is listed there with a current credential. Do this with every company you are considering, not just us. Ask who on the crew actually holds the certification, then look that person up. It takes a minute and removes most of the guesswork.
What the certification changes on your property
- Removal stops being the reflex. A buried trunk flare, a girdling root and simple drought stress all look like a dying tree, and all three are frequently fixable. A certified arborist checks for the fixable causes before recommending the saw.
- Cuts land where the biology says they should. Cut into the branch collar and you have removed the tissue the tree seals wounds with. Leave a long stub and it dies back into the trunk. Neither mistake is visible the week the crew leaves, and both are obvious five years on.
- Timing accounts for disease. We do not prune oaks here between April 15 and July 15, because fresh wounds attract the beetles that spread oak wilt, and an infected red oak can be dead in weeks.
- Risk gets judged on defects, not on looks. Decay at the base, a cracked fork, a root plate starting to lift. Trees that look terrible often stand for decades, and trees that look fine sometimes fail. Knowing the difference is the whole job.

How we work
| What we commit to | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Every estimate happens on site, in person | Nobody can price tree work honestly from a photo. What is under and around the tree changes the number more than the tree does. |
| We will tell you not to remove a tree | Even though removal is the bigger ticket. A mature shade tree cannot be replaced in your lifetime. |
| We never top trees | Stub cuts rot, and the regrowth barely hangs on. Cutting back to healthy side branches brings size down the right way. |
| Property protection is standard | Pads and cribbing under the machinery, rigging over anything fragile, and a site left clean enough that the only evidence we were there is the missing tree. |
| Permits are our job, not yours | Ordinances change sharply between Oakland County cities. We confirm your city’s position before anything gets scheduled. |
| Estimates in writing, scope included | Cleanup is where competing estimates quietly differ. Ours states exactly what is included. |

Licensed, insured, and happy to prove it
Tree Pros, LLC is licensed and insured: a registered Michigan LLC carrying general liability and workers’ compensation coverage. We hand over current insurance certificates whenever you ask, before the job if you like.
Insist on this with anyone working above your house. If an uninsured crew member gets hurt on your property, that liability can land on you. That is often exactly where a cheap estimate is cheap: no insurance, and you only find out when someone gets hurt.

Watch the work
Rob films a lot of his jobs and posts them on two YouTube channels, Rob the Arborist and Tree Pros LLC. They are unedited job footage: rigging, crane picks, storm calls, and the cleanup. If you want to know what a crew is going to do above your house, this is what it looks like.
The trees change every few miles here
Oakland County is not one kind of yard. Shoreline roots around the lakes, dense rigging work in the inner-ring suburbs, century-old estate oaks in the middle, remnant woodland to the north. Where a tree goes in matters as much as what comes out, which is why we wrote up planting a tree the right way.
The ordinances shift just as fast. Farmington Hills regulates from 6 inches, Novi protects trees over 36, and Bloomfield Hills counts removals per lot. We keep all of it straight so you do not have to, and we publish what applies where.
