What tree work looks like in Walled Lake

The lots off Common Street and around West Walled Lake are small, and the houses sit close together. There is rarely anywhere to put a tree down in one piece.

So a removal here is climbing and rigging work. The tree comes apart in sections and each piece gets lowered on a rope into whatever clear ground exists, often a strip of driveway. Add a lakefront lot and it gets tighter again, because the good access is on the street side and the tree is usually on the water side.

Do you need a permit in Walled Lake?

Walled Lake controls trees in the public right of way, and lakefront parcels also sit under state wetland and inland-lakes rules administered by EGLE. Trees well inside your own property line are your decision. Anything at the shoreline gets checked before it is scheduled, and we do that when we come out to quote. City rules get updated and each parcel is its own case, so the city and EGLE have the last word.

On lots this size, the boundary matters

When houses sit twenty feet apart, a mature tree is often close to a property line, and that changes who decides what.

Ownership follows the trunk. If the trunk is on your side, the tree is yours even when half the canopy is over the neighbor’s roof. They may cut branches back to the line but not beyond it, and not so hard that the tree dies.

Most of the friction we see in Walled Lake comes from someone trimming hard from their side and taking the tree with them. It is worth a conversation over the fence before the work rather than after.

What we do in Walled Lake

Sectional removals on tight lots, and shoreline work rigged back from the water. Crown reduction on the silver maples that overhang roofs, shortening long limbs rather than topping the tree.

Stump grinding in spaces most machines cannot reach. We answer storm calls around the clock and document everything your insurer needs.

Maple, willow and a little oak

Silver and Norway maple through the neighborhoods, willow along the water, and red oak on the higher lots. Silver maple and willow are the two that generate storm calls. Both are soft, both are fast, and both are inclined to shed a limb when the wind gets up.

What removal costs in Walled Lake

Removals here generally cost $600 to $2,500, and access is what drives it. A tree we can reach from the street is at the low end. A lakeside tree that has to be carried out through a side yard is at the top, regardless of how big it is. The cost guide explains the rest.

“Tree Pro did an excellent job in cutting down trees and grinding stumps in our condo community. They clean up everything. I would recommend them and our community will be using them for additional work needed.”

Common questions

Can I cut my neighbor’s branches that hang over my yard in Michigan?

You may trim branches back to the property line at your own cost, but two limits apply. You cannot cross the line, so the cutting has to happen from your side and stop at the boundary. And you cannot cut so much that the tree dies or is left unsafe, because that can make you liable for the damage. Ownership follows the trunk, so the tree stays your neighbor’s however much of it hangs over you, and the same rule protects your trees from them. On lots as small as Walled Lake’s the line often runs within a few feet of a mature trunk, which is exactly where the arguments start. Talk to the neighbor before you cut, and write down what you agreed. It costs nothing and it ends most arguments before they start. Our Michigan tree law guide covers overhanging branches, roots and who pays when a tree falls.

Do I need a permit for a lakefront tree in Walled Lake?

Possibly. The city controls trees in the public right of way, the strip between the sidewalk and the street, and those are not yours to remove. Lakefront parcels also fall under state wetland and inland-lakes rules administered by EGLE, which can apply to work at the shoreline even when the city has no tree ordinance of its own. Trees well inside your own property line, away from the water, are your decision. The tree that needs checking is the one at the water’s edge, on the bank or in low ground that holds water in spring. Removing it, grinding the stump or disturbing the bank can all raise the question. We confirm with the city and check the shoreline rules before we book the work, so the estimate already reflects what is allowed. Rules change and depend on the parcel, which is why we check every time instead of assuming.

How much does tree removal cost in Walled Lake, MI?

Most Walled Lake removals come in at $600 to $2,500, and access drives the number more than size does. A tree we can reach from the street, with clear ground beside it, sits at the low end. A lakeside tree that has to be taken apart in sections, lowered onto a strip of driveway and carried out through a side yard sits at the top, whatever its height, because every piece is handled by hand. Silver maple and willow are the trees we remove most here, and both grow large quickly, so a mature one overhanging a roof and a dock is a full day of rigging. If the maple is healthy and just too big for the lot, crown reduction costs a fraction of removal and is often the better answer. Stump grinding is priced on its own, and on shoreline lots it depends on what the setbacks allow.
