What tree work looks like in Troy

Troy’s subdivisions went up fast, and they were planted fast, mostly with silver maple, because it grows quickly and fills a yard in ten years. That was the appeal. The problem is what happens at forty.

Silver maple is soft-wooded. It grows big limbs with weak joins, and in a wind it sheds them. Most of our summer callouts in Troy are a silver maple limb on a roof, a fence or a car. The fix is usually not removal. It is taking weight off the long limbs before they fail, which is far cheaper than what happens if you wait.

Do you need a permit in Troy?

Troy handles tree and woodland preservation under Section 13.07 of its Zoning Ordinance, which covers trees and woodlands on developed and undeveloped land alike. Whether one tree on a residential lot needs approval comes down to where it stands and what your parcel is. So call the City of Troy Building Department at 500 W. Big Beaver Road before any non-emergency work, or let us make that call when we come out to quote. Ordinances change and depend on the parcel, so the city has the final say. Our permit guide compares Troy with its neighbors.

The ash situation in Troy

A lot of Troy’s ash is already dead. The emerald ash borer went through this area years ago, and the trees that were never treated are still standing in back yards.

A dead ash is not a job you can leave. Ash goes brittle faster than almost anything else we work on. Within a couple of years the limbs snap under their own weight, and a tree that could have been climbed safely has to be taken down with a crane instead.

That is the difference between a straightforward removal and a much larger bill. If you have a bare ash still standing, every year it waits adds to the bill.

What we do in Troy

We handle tree removal in Troy, from straightforward back-yard work to sectional takedowns in tight side yards. On the silver maples we trim and reduce the crown, shortening the long limbs so they stop breaking, without ever topping the tree. Dead ash comes out too, and the sooner the better.

We grind stumps below the surface so you can seed or replant over them. Storm calls come at any hour, and we document the work for your insurer.

Maple, ash and a little oak

Silver and Norway maple through the subdivisions, white oak on the older lots along Rochester Road, and green ash, most of it dead or dying. Where there is oak, we keep pruning out of the mid-April to mid-July window, because fresh cuts in summer attract the beetles that carry oak wilt.

What removal costs in Troy

A Troy removal usually runs $600 to $2,500. A big silver maple close to the house sits high in that range because it has to come apart piece by piece. A dead ash in an open back yard is usually near the bottom, as long as it comes down before it gets too brittle to climb. The cost guide explains what moves the number.

Common questions

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Troy, MI?

It depends on where the tree stands and what your parcel is. Troy regulates trees and woodlands under Section 13.07 of its Zoning Ordinance, which covers developed and undeveloped land alike, so the answer is not a simple yes or no the way it is in some neighboring cities. A single tree on an ordinary residential lot is often straightforward, but a parcel that touches a regulated woodland or is being developed can bring the ordinance into play even for one removal. Dead or storm-damaged trees are generally treated differently from healthy ones. The practical step is a call to the City of Troy Building Department at 500 W. Big Beaver Road before any non-emergency work. We make that call when we quote, so the price already reflects what the city requires. Rules change and depend on the parcel, so if the city says something different from this page, the city is right.

What months should you not trim trees in Michigan?

For oaks, avoid mid-April through mid-July. Fresh cuts in that window attract the sap-feeding beetles that spread oak wilt, a fungus that can kill a red oak in a single season and move to neighboring oaks through grafted roots. The same cut made in winter carries almost no risk, which is why our oak work in Troy goes on the dormant-season calendar. Most other species are also best pruned in winter, when the tree is dormant, the structure is visible without leaves, and the ground is firm enough for equipment. Silver maple is the exception people ask about most: it bleeds sap when cut in late winter, which looks alarming but does not harm the tree. Storm damage and hazardous limbs are the exception to every rule and get dealt with whenever they happen. Our oak wilt guide covers the disease in detail.

How much does tree removal cost in Troy, MI?

Most Troy removals fall between $600 and $2,500. The two trees we take down most often sit at opposite ends of that range. A dead ash in an open back yard, removed while the wood is still sound enough to climb, is usually near the bottom. A big silver maple close to the house, with long limbs over the roof and a fence on the other side, sits near the top, because it has to come apart piece by piece with every section roped down. Waiting moves both numbers up: a dead ash that has gone too brittle to climb becomes a crane job, and a silver maple limb that fails onto the roof becomes an emergency call plus a repair bill. Taking weight off a healthy silver maple costs a fraction of removing it, so ask about that first. The stump is priced on its own.
